defenestrations

Yes! I found my old music player for Android. I like it so much more than the new app that comes with ICS. Phone is now significantly more awesome.

Should bills have to pass the Senate, House, get signed by the President, and passed by a court before becoming law? Not saying yes or no to this, it’s just a thought: should laws be challenged for their constitutionality before going into effect? Of course it’s something that’s supposed to be considered now, but you can it’s pretty blatantly disregarded at times. Also it could theoretically allow things like parts of the PATRIOT Act to get repealed, as you would no longer need to wait for a citizen “harmed by a law” to sue and challenge its constitutionality.

I’m saying “court” here, as I’m envisioning a federal court or a special court, so anything could still be later challenged at the Supreme Court level.

The New York Times reports that President Obama has created an official “kill list” that he uses to personally order the assassination of American citizens. Considering that the government already has a “Do Not Call” list and a “No Fly” list, we hereby request that the White House create a “Do Not Kill” list in which American citizens can sign up to avoid being put on the president’s “kill list” and therefore avoid being executed without indictment, judge, jury, trial or due process of law.

THAT SHOULD BE MY RESPONSE.

I was thinking about this other day. You have the six fingers and I have the “mawwiage.”

We’re moving ever-closer to the point where not knowing the difference between a megabyte and a gigabyte is as bad as not knowing the difference between an inch and a foot.

Right now it’s looking like the US government’s prosecution of Megaupload is going to fail miserably. If it does, it’s really going to be a failure of epic proportions, and show again just how much the entertainment industry has direct influence over our government.

Today is also the six year anniversary of Hollywood convincing Swedish police to raid The Pirate Bay and seize their servers, which was a massive overreach by law enforcement (they seized unrelated servers which took down other legitimate companies, it was obvious the police hadn’t done their own investigation and instead were acting under influence of the MPAA, etc.). And after a large amount of fanfare from Hollywood about how it’d scored a major victory… The Pirate Bay was back up a few days later.

I’m having a lot of trouble pinpointing exactly what gets on my nerves about the idea of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, but it does nevertheless.

Like…

Mid-trauma (and afterwards), telling someone that, just seems to minimize the legitimate pain they are in.  I can’t stand that phrase.  It’s well-meaning, and I guess resilience can be built, but…not the point!!

My issue with it is how everything can go more than one way. Like, being bullied can make someone strong against bullying, or it can break them down and scar them for life. Or on a more physical level, like, you could get a disease and manage to fight it off, and afterward you might have a stronger immune system or it may have done permanent damage (whee just related this to a relative).

“I grew up poor, and there are a lot of people that grew up a lot poorer than I am,” Spektor says. “Though, to me, I think that if somebody doesn’t have an easy life, they should at least have access to free books and film and music. I think that I feel very lucky to live in this time where people can go online and get everything I’ve ever made, whether they have a lot of money or not.

“So much of the music that I found out about — whether it was late, it’s better than never — was through people burning CDs for me and people making cassette mixes for me and people giving it to me for free. I feel really grateful that people can just type in my name and listen to things that I made. I feel so lucky for that.”

So I guess the ship name for John Watson and Sherlock Holmes is sometimes “Johnlock” and every time I read that, of course I think of John Locke from LOST.

Or, you know, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Locke
